This 1896 volume contains an excerpt from Grote’s History of Greece, “The Retreat of the Ten Thousand, ” about the Greek mercenary units, started by Cyrus the Younger, and the many battles won on their 2, 000 mile retreat to the sea. Also included is Segur’s abridged narrative of “Napoleon’s Retreat from Moscow.”

George Grote (1794-1871) was an English historian. His best known works are Essentials of Parliamentary Reform (1831); his masterful multi-volume History of Greece (1846-1856); Life, Teachings, and Death of Socrates (1859); and Poems, 1815- 1823 (1872).
Philippe-Paul, comte de Ségur (1780-1873) was a French historian. A general on the personal staff of Napoleon, he wrote of his war experiences. His best known works are Histoire de Napoléon et de la Grande Armée Pendant L’Année 1812 (1824), Histoire de Russie et de Pierre le Grand (1829), Histoire de Charles VIII (1835-1842), and Histoire et Mémoires (1873).
