Geoffrey Chester is charmed by the beautiful woman—Aline Chapdelaines—he glimpses daily on his way to work. For Geoffrey, it’s love at first sight. But romance seems impossible because of the exclusive Creole society to which she belongs. The discovery of an old manuscript brings him closer to her in this delicate depiction of the old régime in New Orleans.

A propos de l’auteur

George Washington Cable (1844-1925), after fighting for the Confederacy in the Civil War, wrote about his native Louisiana in realist novels. His anti-racist and pro-civil rights attitudes eventually brought him to the north. Novels such as Old Creole Days, The Grandissimes, and Madame Delphine are often cited as forerunners of the work of William Faulkner.
