Queste conferenze furono tutte, salvo la nona, tenute in Milano, tra il 7 febbraio e l’11 aprile del 1897, per incarico avuto dalla “Unione Lombarda per la Pace”. Naturalmente, furono prima dette in forma più breve e più semplice; allungate, arricchite e rimutate poi in vari modi, prima di essere date alle stampe. Al momento di pubblicarle, vorrei esprimere un desiderio: che non si attribuissero a questo libro ambizioni di propaganda troppo grandi; sopratutto che non si chiamasse il suo autore, come già mi sembra di udire, l’apostolo di una nobile utopia, che purtroppo utopia resterà.
