In H.P Lovecraft’s ‘The Dunwich Horror’, we are told a story of Wilbur Whateley, the son of a deformed albino mother and an unknown father (alluded to in passing by the mad Old Whateley as ‘Yog-Sothoth’), and the strange events surrounding his birth and precocious development. Wilbur matures at an abnormal rate, reaching manhood within a decade. All the while, his sorcerer grandfather indoctrinates him into certain dark rituals and the study of witchcraft.

Lovecraft has become a cult figure in the horror genre and is noted as creator of the ‘Cthulhu Mythos, ‘ a series of loosely interconnected fictions featuring a ‘pantheon’ of nonhuman creatures, as well as the famed Necronomicon, a grimoire of magical rites and forbidden lore. His works typically had a tone of ‘cosmic pessimism, ‘ regarding mankind as insignificant and powerless in the universe.
