Among the goals of economic policy is a rising standard of living, and it is generally understood that the means to that end is rising productivity. Productivity relates the quantity of goods and services produced, and the income generated as a result of that production, to the amount of labor required to produce it. The most commonly used measure of the living standard of a nation, is simply the ratio of that income to the total population, without regard to how the income is actually distributed. This book examines the link between productivity and living standards and the trends and proposals in productivity growth.
