Matthew G. Lewis (1775–1818) was an English novelist who wrote in the gothic and horror genre. His education at Oxford groomed him for a short career in the British embassy—which he found tedious. After tuning to writing, Lewis was nicknamed “Monk, ” because of his successful classic Gothic novel, The Monk. Lewis also wrote The Castle Spectre; The Minister: A Tragedy, in Five Acts; and Tales of Wonder; among other works.
