This semiautobiographical 1836 novel of the Napoleonic Wars reflects the author’s quarter century in the British Navy. Young, spoiled Jack Easy finds his egalitarian ideas challenged when he joins the lower decks, in a story that blends high-seas action with social commentary, a farcical costume ball, and a comic duel scene.
