While hardly a household name in the English-speaking world, Bjørnson was-and remains-an immensely important literary figure in the Nordic world, a rival in popularity to his Norwegian compatriot Hendrik Ibsen. Grillparzer, likewise, though little known outside Europe, was widely admired in his native Austria. As a result, postcards of both writers were available in vast quantities during the Golden Age, and a healthy assortment of examples are presented throughout this book, in tandem with informative text about each author.
About the author
Greg Gatenby is the founding Artistic Director of the annual and world-renowned International Festival of Authors in Toronto, and of its adjunct, the weekly Harbourfront Reading Series.
