The Chief Witness, first published in 1940, features detective Roger Bennion in a classic "golden-age" British mystery by Herbert Adams (1874-1958). The story centers on two brothers who appeared to have committed suicide-at the same moment-even though they were living miles apart. Investigation by the police soon reveals that the deaths were not suicide but a case of murder. Adams wrote more than 50 mysteries during his long career.Herbert Adams (1874-1958) was an English writer of over fifty ‘cosy’ Crime Fictions between 1924 and 1958, which were often set in or around golfing competitions. He also wrote short stories, humorous verse and two other Crime Fictions under the pseudonym Jonathan Gray. His first series character was Jimmy Haswell, a London criminal lawyer, who featured in nine books. After some non-series books, including the excellent Body in the Bunker, he introduced his second major series character, Roger Bennion, in 1936.
