Narziss und Goldmund is the author”s masterpiece published in 1930, which narrates the life experience of a pair of friends who represent the rational asceticism and the sensual hedonism of lust. The monastery”s young apprentice, Narziss, was so talented that the abbot, Daniel, loved him. The new student Goldmund is infatuated with the worldly life. Although they become friends, Goldmund does not want to listen to the worldly instructions of Narziss. He goes to the village to have a tryst with the girl and escaped the monastery to wander around. He experienced both happiness and sorrow, which turned him into a mature person. He was later sentenced to death for falling in love with the governor”s mistress. The abbot, Narziss, rescued him from prison and let him concentrate on sculpture creation. Glodmund was out on the march again, and on the way he fell seriously ill. Naeziss expressed great kindness before his death and Goldmund finally rested in peace.
