The content is taken from The Chalk Circle, a traditional opera of the Yuan Dynasty written by Li Qianfu. Its full name is Bao Zheng’s Wise Investigation with the Chalk Circle. Governor Georgi Abashwili was killed in the coup and his wife abandoned her biological son, Little Michael when she fled in a hurry; a kind-hearted maid risked her life to bring him up through hardships; after the coup subsided, the Governor’s wife asked to recover her son from the maid in order to inherit the legacy. Judge Azdak used the chalk to adjudicate the case: the Governor’s wife was so greedy that she tried hard to pull the child out regardless of his life. However, the maid can’t bear to heart the child… The end of the story is that the child was not sentenced to his mother, but to his adoptive mother, the maid.
