When the disciples asked Jesus to teach them to pray, he didn’t just give them a prayer to repeat–he gave them a way to pray. By using the elements within the Lord’s Prayer as an outline, we can order our personal devotions according to the prayer of Jesus. We can eventually make the Lord’s Prayer our own prayer, using the words as a sure guide to personal devotion.
This approach treats each phrase of the Lord’s Prayer as rich with insight and direction for us. Before we pray for blessings for ourselves, for example, we pray to be a source of blessing to others.
