John Alexander “Black Jack” Logan (1826-1886), the founder of Memorial Day, served in the Mexican War and was a general in the Union Army during the Civil War. He served the state of Illinois as a State Senator, Congressman, and Senator. He was a candidate for Vice President of the United States.
