After a period of loss, and much change, Saskia Beudel began walking. Within eighteen months she had walked in the Snowy Mountains, twice along the south-west coast of Tasmania, the Mac Donnell Ranges west of Alice Springs, the Arnhem Land plateau in Kakadu, the Wollemi National Park in New South Wales, and in Ladakh in the Himalayas. But she kept returning to the glowing ochre gorges of central Australia.

Saskia Beudel is a novelist, essayist, and non-fiction writer. She first trained as a visual artist before turning to writing. Her novel, Borrowed Eyes (Picador, 2002), was shortlisted for the NSW Premier’s Literary Award and the Dobbie Award. She has also had essays published in The Iowa Review, Best Australian Essays and other journals. Saskia is currently a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Sydney, based at Sydney College of the Arts.
