Depending on how the class is defined, there are hundreds of federal mandatory minimum offenses, yet only a handful are prosecuted with any regularity. In October 2009, Congress instructed the United States Sentencing Commission to prepare a report on the mandatory minimum sentencing provisions under federal law. In early 2010, the Commission conducted a survey of federal district court judges regarding their views on mandatory minimum sentencing. A majority of those responding endorsed amendments to the safety valve and substantial assistance exceptions. This new book examines sentencing levels and mandatory minimums with regard to drug sentences and the safety valve, federal cocaine sentencing disparities and three-strike mandatory sentencing.
