Charles Churchill (1731–1764) was an English poet and satirist, best known for his audacious and biting satires that reflected the political and cultural climate of his time. Born on February 1731 in Westminster, London, Churchill rose to fame with his scathing poetic critiques, which often targeted high-profile figures and institutions. His career accelerated with the publication of “The Rosciad” in 1761, a satire that mercilessly critiqued the London theatre scene, assaulting the vanity of actors and earning Churchill considerable attention and acclaim.
