Ellen Banda Aaku wurde 1965 in England geboren und wuchs in Sambia und anderen afrikanischen Ländern auf. Sie studierte öffentliche Verwaltung an der Universität Lusaka. Sie publizierte drei Jugendbücher und Gedichte. Mit Patchwork, ihrem ersten Buch für Erwachsene, erhielt sie 2010 den »Penguin Prize for African Writing«. Sie war 2012 auf der Shortlist des Commonwealth Writers”Prize. Ellen Banda Aaku lebt heute in London.
