John Nichol (1833-1894) formed the Old Morality Society in Oxford with Albert Venn Dicey, Thomas Hill Green, and Swinburne to discuss literature and, in 1862, went on to teach English literature at Glasgow College. He contributed an article on American literature to the ninth edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica. Besides Byron, his biographies include Robert Burns and Carlyle.
