Tentang Penulis

George Lewis Becke, better known as Louis Becke, was a prominent Australian Pacific trader, adventurer, and author who gained fame for his vivid storytelling and deep insight into the South Seas. Born on June 18, 1855, in Port Macquarie, New South Wales, Becke left school at the age of 14 and tried his hand at various jobs before setting sail to the Pacific Islands, where he engaged in copra trading, pearling, and other maritime activities. These experiences richly informed his literary work, imbuing his narratives with authenticity and a sense of adventure. Becke turned to writing full-time after returning to Australia and published his first story, ‘By Reef and Palm’ (1894), which received favorable reviews for its portrayal of Pacific life. Subsequently, he released ‘Martin Of Nitendi; and The River Of Dreams’ which further established his reputation as a master storyteller with a unique perspective on colonialism, indigenous cultures, and the harsh realities of island life. Becke’s literary style is characterized by a blend of realism and romanticism, often featuring flawed yet relatable characters contending with the challenges of life in the Pacific. Despite his death on February 18, 1913, Becke’s work continues to be celebrated for its significant contribution to Australian literature and its enduring depiction of the Pacific Islands during the late 19th century.
