Nicola Griffith is a former self-defence instructor who turned to writing full-time upon being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. She now holds a Ph D and is the multiple-award-winning author of seven novels — Ammonite (1993), Slow River (1995), The Blue Place (1998), Stay (2002), Always (2007) and Hild (2013) — and a memoir. A native of Yorkshire, she lives with her wife, the writer Kelley Eskridge, in Seattle.
