Thomas Henry Huxley was born near London on May 4, 1825. The lack of formal education he received did not detain him from becoming an assistant surgeon in the navy at twenty-one years old. Known as “Darwin’s bulldog, ” Huxley coined the word “agnostic” and wrote several guidebooks on anatomy and zoology. He died on June 29, 1895.
