Walter Bagehot (1826-1877) was an English businessman and author. His writings focused on literature, politics, and economics. He founded the National Review in 1855, and went on to become the editor-in-chief of The Economist. Among his published books is The English Constitution (1867), which perceptively compared the British government to that of America.
 
Richard Holt Hutton (1826–1897) was an English writer and theologian. A lifelong friend of Walter Bagehot, they were joint editors of the National Review for ten years. Hutton also was coeditor of The Spectator. Among his works is Criticisms on Contemporary Thought & Thinkers (1894).
