Anne Renfroe Hughes is the daughter of Carl and Mae Renfroe of Decatur, Georgia. Her two sisters are Jean Eickhoff of Decatur, Ga and Sue Tetterton of Duluth, Ga. Her son is Matt Hughes, an illustrator, of Augusta, Ga. Anne’s father was the Superintendent of the Decatur City Schools.
Anne received a BA in Elementary Education with a minor in English from Emory University in 1966. At this time she was honored as “Miss Memory” with a leadership scholarship from Oxford College of Emory University. Anne finished her Master’s Degree in Education in 1978 from the University of Georgia.
Other honors include 1st Runner Up and Miss Congeniality in the Miss Wheelchair Georgia Pageant and Handicapped Woman of the Year in 1986 given by the Pilot Club of Georgia.
Anne was accidentally shot in 1977 which resulted in partial paralysis below the waist. Currently Anne lives at an assisted living facility in the Atlanta area connected to Emory University. She worked for 20 years at the Southern Company while she raised her son Matt.
Anne wrote the eulogies for both of her parents’ funerals, her mother in 2002 and her father in 2004. In April of 2009, Anne says she received divine intervention and began writing her comedic poems of little animals with human characteristics. Anne hopes these poems will make you laugh and forget the more negative issues of your life.
