This handbook provides a comprehensive, interdisciplinary overview of key theoretical, analytical and normative approaches, topics and debates in contemporary scholarship about gender and citizenship. It demonstrates how diverse historical, social, political, economic and legal dimensions have shaped the evolution of gendered citizenship in different parts of the world, as well as how these dimensions transform the interrelations between individuals, social groups and communities across time, place and space.
Bringing together insights from scholars across gender studies, political science, law, sociology, philosophy and cultural studies, this book demonstrates how intersectional and transnational approaches can provide us with theoretical and methodological tools to understand gendered inequalities and injustices in societies. Chapters examine relations between gender, sexuality, populism and nationalism; transnational feminism during times of #Me Too and Black Lives Matter; the increasing political and popular support of LGBTQ+ claims as human rights issues; trans/gender citizenship; gendered indigenous citizenship; and the intersections of gender, religion and citizenship, among others. Birte Siim is Professor Emerita in Gender Research at The Faculty of Social Sciences, Aalborg University, Denmark. She is co-editor/co-author of Citizens’ Activism and Solidarity Movements (2019, Palgrave Macmillan), Diversity and Contestations over Nationalism in Europe and Canada (2018, Palgrave/Macmillan), Negotiating Gender and Diversity in an Emergent European Public Sphere, (2013, Palgrave/Macmillan), and author of Gender and Citizenship: Politics and Agency in France, Britain and Denmark (2000, Cambridge University Press).Pauline Stoltz is a Research Advisor at Kristianstad University, Sweden. She holds a Ph D in political science from Lund University, Sweden, and has worked at Malmö university in Sweden and Aalborg University in Denmark. During the preparation of the Handbook, she was Visiting Associate Professor at National Sun Yat-sen University, Kaohsiung, Taiwan and Visiting Senior Research Fellow at King’s College London. She is co-editor/co-author of Feminisms in the Nordic Region: Neoliberalism, nationalism and decolonial critique (2021, Palgrave Macmillan), and author of Gender, resistance, and transnational memories of violent conflict (2020, Palgrave Macmillan).
