Daneben widmet er sich dem Neuübersetzen von Klassikern wie Alessandro Manzoni und Giacomo Leopardi. Er erhielt mehrere Preise, zuletzt 2013 den deutsch-italienischen Übersetzerpreis für sein Lebenswerk.
