Chester Himes nació en 1909 en el seno de una familia afroamericana de clase media. Familiarizado con el mundo delictivo, empezó a escribir relatos cortos en la cárcel. Su primera novela se publicó en 1945. Ya convertido en un escritor de éxito, y huyendo del racismo de EEUU, se mudó a París y después a Alicante, donde murió en 1984.
