Edward George Earle Lytton Bulwer-Lytton, first Baron Lytton (1803–1873), was an esteemed English writer and politician with a prolific career spanning multiple genres including poetry, plays, and novels. Born on May 25, 1803, in London, Bulwer-Lytton attended Trinity College, Cambridge, and subsequently won the Chancellor’s Gold Medal for English verse, a precursor to his literary success. He published his first work, ‘Ismael’, in 1820. His literary career is marked by a versatility that encompasses historical romance, science fiction, and political commentaries. One of his notable historical novels is ‘Rienzi, the Last of the Roman Tribunes’ (1835), which delves into the life of the medieval Italian populist leader, Cola di Rienzo, and his struggles to restore Rome’s glory. Bulwer-Lytton’s writing is characterized by elaborate language, a deep fascination with the occult and mysticism, and a profound interest in socio-political issues. His works were acknowledged for their imagination and vivid depiction of human psychology.
