The purpose of this book is to provide you, the reader, with insight into my writing style and to assist you in developing your own style for writing in cards for your loved ones. Additionally, the contents of this book will enable you to utilize a few lines or even transcribe and use entire poems suitable for your family and friends.

One particular poem to pay close attention to is ’14, 600 days.’ This calculation is based on a 40-year marriage or a Ruby wedding anniversary. You can easily recalculate it for any anniversary and include it in the title, as it doesn’t appear within the poem. Simply adjust the year according to the anniversary—20, 30, 40, 50 years, and so on. The positioning of this calculation does not affect the rhyme, giving you a versatile poem that can be used repeatedly for any anniversary.

Similarly, ’60 years young’ and ’70 years young’ can be modified for birthdays. Any age can be used without affecting the rhyme. The same applies to ‘A darn good M.O.T.’ and ‘There’s a thing.’

The poem ‘Dad, it’s your Birthday’ can be changed to ‘Mum, it’s your Birthday, ‘ along with ‘Penny for your thoughts, ‘ ‘Guiding light, ‘ ‘Dad, ‘ and ‘Lazy days.’

On the other hand, ‘Hopes and dreams’ and ‘The little things’ can be reversed from Mum to Dad. Likewise, ‘One in a million’ can be changed accordingly, but remember to switch from Maternal to Paternal.

Two other poems worth mentioning are ‘Hard to find, ‘ where you can switch ‘Wife’ to ‘Husband’ and remove the term ‘darling wife, ‘ and ‘Rare and special.’

‘Trust in me’ is a versatile poem where you can use ‘Wife, ‘ ‘Husband, ‘ ‘Girl, ‘ ‘Boy, ‘ or simply insert the word ‘Love.’

‘A piece of Heaven’ is another flexible poem that can be used for anniversaries, birthdays, or Valentine’s Day by filling in the appropriate words.

Lastly, ‘Hidden Charms’ is a useful poem to accompany a bouquet of flowers.

Although these few poems can be altered to suit your needs, you will find that the rest are universal and cover a wide range of topics. I hope these guidelines are helpful in some way.

May this book bring you success in writing your own poetry and provide you with as much enjoyment in reading its content as I had in creating it.

Circa l’autore

This compilation of poetry spans two decades, encompassing a wide array of occasions such as birthdays, anniversaries, Valentine’s Day, Christmas, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, and more. These verses were never originally composed with a book in mind; instead, they accumulated over the years, quietly growing in size and gathering dust. I never could have fathomed that this would ever come to fruition.
After attempting to engage with a few greeting card companies without success, I unintentionally sent my work to a book publisher. Surprisingly, they promptly reached out to me, leading to the book deal I now have with Xlibris. Since then, I haven’t looked back.
My ability to write was inherited from my paternal grandmother, who penned countless poems and compiled her own little books as a personal reference. I have inherited this talent, and it has also allowed me to develop skills in songwriting.
As a child growing up in my hometown of Saundersfoot in West Wales, I would sit on Scar Rock with my back against a tree, which is featured on the cover of the book. From there, I would gaze out at the sea and the breath-taking Pembrokeshire coastline, writing about what I observed and what inspired me, oblivious to what would unfold in the years to come.
At my core, I am a spiritualist, and I believe that the essence and nature of this poetry not only reflect my heart and personality but also my very soul. I firmly adhere to the notion that everything happens for a reason, and I feel that I needed this time to cultivate and amass a collection.
By publishing this book, my intention is to offer it as a guide for readers, providing inspiration for writing something heartfelt in a loved one’s card or even allowing them to utilize the occasional line or complete poem to bring joy to someone’s day.
So here I am, presenting my work to you. I sincerely hope that you derive as much pleasure from reading these verses as I did from writing them.
Enjoy Best wishes
Ian Davies
