James R. Dow ist Professor Emeritus für Deutsche Volkskunde und Sprachwissenschaft an der Iowa State University in Ames. Seine sprachwissenschaftlichen Arbeiten konzentrieren sich auf deutsche Minderheitensprachen in Amerika (Amanadeutsch, Amisch und Pennsylvania Dutch) und in Europa (Zimbrisch). Außerdem war er zehn Jahre lang Herausgeber der Internationalen Volkskundlichen Bibliografie.
