A tale of politics, money, and corruption, young Mr. Vane breaks with his father, chief counsel for the railroad that controls the politics of New Hampshire. Vane junior wins a damage suit against the railroad and hopes to run for governor, but his father blocks his nomination as his last act of duty to the railroad.

Winston Churchill (1871-1947) was an American author, essayist, and poet. His first acclaimed work was Richard Carvel (1899), but he went on to publish twelve books and many plays. His naturalist style and political flair were characteristic of his writings. He worked in politics, and wrote about his tours of battlefields in World War One.
