John Atkinson Hobson, commonly known as J. A. Hobson (1858–1940), was an influential English economist, social scientist, and critic of imperialism whose works are seen as foundational in the study of modern political economy and international relations. He was a prolific author, best known for his theory of underconsumption presented in “The Evolution of Modern Capitalism” (1894) and his critique of imperialism in “Imperialism: A Study” (1902), which influenced thinkers such as Vladimir Lenin. In his book “Morals of Economic Internationalism” (1920), Hobson continued to develop his ideas of internationalism, advocating for ethical standards in economic interactions among nations and critiquing the unequal economic relationships that often resulted from imperialist policies. Hobson”s scholarship often transcended pure economic theory, incorporating a strong humanistic and ethical concern for social justice and equality, which can be seen throughout his works. With an intellectual legacy that extends to the development of Keynesian economics and the modern welfare state, Hobson”s writings continue to be referenced for their insightful analysis of social and economic issues.
