Born in Colfax, Iowa, Hall was initially a student at Grinnell College before leaving to serve in the British and then American air forces during World War I. Apart from the Bounty books, Hall alone authored ‘Kitchener’s Mob’ (1916), recounting his experiences in WWI, and ‘The Hurricane’ (1936), which was later adapted into a film.
