Joanne Mulligan is an (Hon) Professor of Education in the School of Education, Faculty of Arts, Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia. Her background is in primary school teaching and leadership, pre-service teacher education and professional development in mathematics and science education. Over the past 40 years she has led a range of research projects focusing on early mathematics and science development and teacher professional learning, including large projects funded by the Australian government and education stakeholders. She is renowned in Australasia and internationally for her expertise in early mathematics education research and for her contribution to curricula and assessment, and professional learning programs. Her current research projects include large scale projects in early numeracy, spatial reasoning and statistical reasoning, along with her continued implementation of research on ‘pattern and structure’ internationally.
