About the author
John Dowson (1820–1881) was a noted British scholar of Hinduism. He taught in India for much of his life. His book A Classical Dictionary of Hindu Mythology remains one of the most authoritative and complete works on the topic. Professor Dowson was also the editor of The History of India, As Told by Its Own Historians.
