There is no calamity greater than lavish desires
There is no greater guilt than discontent
There is no greater disaster than greed.’ Lao-tzu
BUMWAD a novel by John M Powers ….a story that plays out in the remarkable settings of The Caribbean, Puerto Rico, Bahamas, Key West, Gitmo & Havana, Cuba. With a mysterious Latin Beauty named Lena, Big Money Marlin Tournaments, a huge Drug Empire, US Marine Special Forces 4Stars, a Full Bird, Mayor Rudy Giuliani & Greed. Trump plays a huge role, #41, but is always in the background. The last chapter is amazing, when he makes the scene. Ian Mc Leod, an Architect & Fishing Captain, with his two sons, see Hemingway’s Cuba through Lena’s, eyes. She calls out Mc Leod that he is too much like Hemmingway, both artists, loving the local Artistry on the cracked walls, the music played by mistrals in the Shanty towns, his love of her Cuban people, his lack of fear walking around a Communist Cuba, like he owned the place, both men testing the dangers of life and way too passionate for their own good. Unbeknownst to him, her father is the Don of the largest Drug Operation in the world, The GROGGASS Empire, that has been operating in pure stealth, in Cuba, on a 5000-acre Sugar Cane Plantation for 25 years at the blessing of Rual Castro and his Generals. An attack on The Groggass Cortel & Cuba is imminent. An unlikely group of men, meet in Johnny Smilin’ Dudley’s Abaco, Bahamas, oceanfront home, Ian designed 20 years ago. It’s on a hill in Guano Cay, (named for bird dung) not far from the famous old Nippers Bar & just across the Abaco Bay from the huge Boat Harbor Marina, where Ian is fishing in the huge 94 boat Bacardi Shootout & Junkanoo Festival. Smilin’, a long time friend of Ian’s, is a hilarious but brilliant man, who lives half his life in the Bahamas, matches wits with the NY Mayor. They plan an attack on Cuba with a 100 Combat Marines, an Op called Fidel, a crossing of the Gulfstream and the likes few ‘Military Minds’ have ever been a part of. Never in history. #41 is the mystery character that resounds at the end. Ian may claim the fame of Jack Weis-played by Redford in HAVANA. She calls him ‘a hero in tarnished armor.’
About the author
John M Powers, the author of BUMWAD a novel, is an architect of over 25 years with his firm, Powers Design Inc., who has a staff of 25, in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, that mainly works for large developers. He was lead design on large scale projects throughout the Southeast United States & Puerto Rico, with a total est. value of over 4 $billion. He & his two sons, Mc Leod Powers & Daniel Powers, are avid offshore Bluewater fishermen, and, as his characters in his novel, BUMWAD, have fished many years in huge Marlin Tournaments in The Bahamas. A place he loves and the basis for the amazing venues and locations in his story… about huge fishing tournaments, with 2 sons & a father, US Marine Special Forces, 4Star Generals & an attack on Cuba. John, Mac and Daniel (who was 5 years a US Marine in Hawaii) all have been to the huge Junkanoo Festivals in The Bahamas that are not unlike Mardi Gras, New Orleans. This festival makes up a chapter or two in BUMWAD, a story about Greed & a few brave men who fought it. He’s loved & been fascinated of Havana and all of Cuba. It all shows in his story. He studied extensively all about this beleaguered beautiful island when he was at college at the University of Florida. And Its wonderful & happy people, all 8 million of them, still under The Castro’s Evil Regime of Communism after 50 years worth of it. John uses his professional experience working for big developers not unlike TRUMP, who is a key character in the novel. But an illusive one, in the book. Aways in the background. #41. Ian Shear Mc Leod, the main character… an architect, agrees to design a huge home in Cuba on a 5000 acre Sugar Plantation. His new client, he met at The Bacardi Shootout Marlin Tournament, is the Don of a huge Drug Empire. Unbeknownst to Ian. His daughter is a Cuban Latin Beauty. Ian is a Scotsman, like Powers. Hold Fast. The author’s passion of all things nature & remarkable things, brings his own take to this character that’s ‘a hero in tarnished armor’, the Mysterious Latin Beauty, Lena, he falls for, calls him…with his incredible descriptions of the fascinating settings of the Bahamas, Havana, & The Huge Rain Forests of Cuba. It took Powers two years to write this fascinating story. He is an artist & the cover Illustration of ‘Lena’, the mysterious Latin Beauty, & the many of the old ‘historical like’, sepia toned images, dispersed carefully throughout the novel, are his.
