About the author

Lewis Mumford (1895–1990) was an American historian, philosopher of technology and science, and critic who was a foremost urban planning theorist of the twentieth century. Mumford held the position of architecture critic for The New Yorker magazine for more than 30 years. His The City in History won the 1961 National Book Award.
