Huanqin, an eight-year-old from Northeast China who recently moved to Jiangnan, is shown in a realistic piece as experiencing difficulties with her language and her daily life. With delicate, new, and organic ink, the novel illustrates the protagonist’s journey from being cut off from his family to eventually adopting a new setting of raising, capturing the child’s subtle and trying psychological adjustments. There are no plot twists or turns throughout the entire book, but it has a rich atmosphere of life, a convincing depiction of the inner world, recognizable character portraits, and a definite growing process. In particular, it painstakingly captures and expresses the Town of Northeast China scenes of leisurely comfortable living. We develop our poetic sensibilities and our ability to perceive carefully and relish leisurely in the hectic present.
