Ludwig Wittgenstein fue un filósofo, matemático, lingüista y lógico austríaco, posteriormente nacionalizado británico. Su primera teoría, contenida en el Tractatus logico-philosophicus, plantea que existe una relación biunívoca entre las palabras y la cosas, y que las proposiciones que encadenan las palabras constituyen «imágenes» de la realidad. La Conferencia sobre Ética fue preparada por Wittgenstein para pronunciarla en Cambridge. Probablemente se dictó en la sociedad conocida con el nombre «The Heretics». Por lo que sabemos, ésta fue la única conferencia pública escrita o pronunciada por Wittgenstein.
