Lyman Frank Baum wurde 1856 in einem kleinen Ort im Staat New York geboren. Sein reicher Vater war im Ölgeschäft tätig. Der Sohn wollte Schriftsteller werden, dann Schauspieler und schließlich Operndirektor. Also kaufte ihm sein Vater erst eine Druckerpresse, dann ein Theater und schließlich ein Opernhaus. Als der Vater starb und nur Schulden hinterließ, musste Baum plötzlich selbst Geld verdienen. Er arbeitete als Reporter, stellte Schmieröl her, leitete ein Warenhaus und züchtete Hühner – jahrelang, ohne Erfolg. Der Durchbruch kam im Jahr 1900, mit 44 Jahren schrieb er eine jener Gutenachtgeschichten auf, die er täglich für seine Kinder erfand: Der Zauberer von Oz.Der Stoff diente als Vorlage für ein Musical, Theaterstücke und Hörspiele. Baum starb 1919 und erlebt den größten Erfolg seiner Dorothy nicht mehr: den Farbfilm ‘The Wizard of Oz’ von 1939, der mit einem Oscar ausgezeichnet wurde und in dem die 16 Jahre alte Judy Garland als Dorothy den Hit ‘Somewhere over the Rainbow’ singt.
