About the author

Mary Boykin Chesnut (1823–1886) always breathed politics. She was the first-born daughter of Stephen Miller, a U.S. senator, and married James Chesnut, Jr., when she was seventeen years old. She followed her husband from one assignment to another during the war and is buried next to him at Knights Hill Cemetery in Camden, South Carolina.
