Maurice Thompson (1844-1901) was born in Fairfield, Indiana to a Baptist minister, who later became a plantation owner when the family moved to Georgia. Thompson was a successful soldier in the Civil War and was a scout for the Confederate army. After the war, he held various jobs as a civil engineer for the railroads, a lawyer, a state geologist, and finally a novelist. Thompson’s Fairfield home was moved to Vincennes and is open for tours.
