About the author
Mary Augusta Ward, née Arnold (1851-1920), wrote novels under her married name, Mrs. Humphry Ward. Born in Tasmania, her family moved to England in 1856. Her writing career began in journalism and with her children’s book Milly and Olly. Her “religious novels with a purpose” such as Robert Elsmere extolled Victorian virtues and were bestsellers in England and the United States.
