Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. The Nation’s estuaries are heterogeneous in size, physiography, watershed interactions, chemistry, and biota. In this Profile, we point out how the various properties of Tijuana Estuary compare to those of other estuaries within the region as well as within the nation. The designation of Tijuana Estuary as one of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Estuarine Research Reserves shows that it is one of a class of ecosystems worthy of research and education, yet different enough to warrant selection as a regional type.
