Daniel Defoe (c. 1660 – 1731) was an English writer, journalist, and trader, best known for his novel ‘Robinson Crusoe’ (1719) which is often credited as marking the beginning of realistic fiction as a literary genre. His works are characterized by their keen observation of society, deep insight into human nature, and vivid portrayal of the struggles and triumphs of the individual. Besides ‘Robinson Crusoe’, Defoe wrote several other significant works including ‘Moll Flanders’ (1722), which explores the life of a resourceful and dynamic woman in 17th-century England, and ‘A Journal of the Plague Year’ (1722), a fictionalized account of the Great Plague of London in 1665, told from the perspective of a man who chooses to remain in the city.
