Verta Taylor is Distinguished Professor of Sociology and Feminist Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where she teaches courses on gender, sexuality, and social movements. She is coauthor with Leila J. Rupp of Survival in the Doldrums: The American Women’s Rights Movement, 1945 to the 1960s and Drag Queens at the 801 Cabaret; author of Rock-a-by Baby: Feminism, Self-Help, and Postpartum Depression; coeditor of The Oxford Handbook of U.S. Women’s Social Movement Activism and The Marrying Kind? Debating Same-Sex Marriage within the Lesbian and Gay Movement, and author of nearly 150 articles, chapters, and reviews. Professor Taylor received the American Sociological Association’s 2011 Jessie Bernard Award for lifetime contributions to the study of gender, and in 2008 she received the John D. Mc Carthy Lifetime Achievement Award for her scholarship on social movements and the Simon and Gagnon Award for her career of scholarship on the study of sexualities. She has also been awarded Sociologists for Women in Society’s Mentoring and Feminist Lecturer Awards.
