Elizabeth Bowen nació en Dublín el 7 de junio de 1899. Cuando su padre empezó a padecer problemas mentales, en 1907, Elizabeth y su madre se mudaron a Inglaterra. Tras la muerte de su madre en 1912, se trasladó a Londres, a casa de sus tíos. Cursó estudios de arte, pero pronto se percató de que su talento residía en la escritura. Se unió entonces al círculo de Bloomsbury, donde hizo amistad con Rose Macaulay, quien la ayudó a encontrar editorial para su primer libro: Encounters (1923), una colección de relatos breves. A pesar de estar casada desde 1923 con Alan Cameron (con quien apenas tuvo trato físico), Bowen mantuvo varias relaciones extramatrimoniales, incluyendo una con el escritor irlandés Seán Ó Faoláin y otra con la poeta estadounidense May Sarton. Tras la publicación de su novela Al norte (1932), el matrimonio se mudó al número 2 de Clarence Terrace, cerca de Regent”s Park, donde Bowen escribiría Una casa en París (1935) y la que está considerada su obra maestra, La muerte del corazón (1938). En 1937 pasó a ser miembro de la Irish Academy of Letters. Durante la guerra y en los años inmediatamente posteriores, Bowen escribió varias novelas que retrataban el Londres asediado por las bombas y la pobreza, entre las que destaca El calor del día (1949). En 1948 fue nombrada Comandante de la Orden del Imperio Británico. Tras la jubilación de su marido en 1952, el matrimonio se mudó a la propiedad familiar de Bowen”s Court, en el condado irlandés de Cork. Allí fueron anfitriones de escritores de la talla de Eudora Welty, Virginia Woolf, Carson Mc Cullers o Iris Murdoch. El matrimonio, sin embargo, pasaba por estrecheces económicas, y Bowen se vio obligada a sobrevivir dando conferencias en Estados Unidos. En 1959 tuvo que vender su casa, que sería demolida en 1960. En 1969, ganó el James Tait Black Memorial Prize por su novela Eva Trout, obra que fue seleccionada en 1970 para el Booker Prize. Elizabeth Bowen murió de cáncer de pulmón en 1973, en un hospital de Londres. Tenía 73 años. La enterraron junto a su marido, a las puertas de la iglesia de St. Colman, en Farahy, condado de Cork. Está considerada una de las más importantes narradoras en lengua inglesa del siglo XX.
