He was for some time general editor of Palgrave Macmillan’s Studies in Diplomacy and International Relations series, and an associate editor of the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography. The most recent of his many books on diplomacy is A Diplomatic Whistleblower in the Victorian Era (2013).
