Von 1973 bis 2008 war er Professor für Germanistik/Literaturwissenschaft und Literaturdidaktik an der Universität Essen; von 1996 bis 2004 Fachgutachter der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft für Neuere deutsche Literatur, von 2002 bis 2005 Fellow am Kulturwissenschaftlichen Institut des Landes NRW, von 2006 bis 2008 Leiter des Master-Studiengangs „Literatur und Medienpraxis“ an der Universität Duisburg-Essen.
