Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. As his former work on the Nose and Throat, which reached the fourth edition, has now been out of print for several years, the author trusts that this text book on Rhinology, based on his earlier treatise, and the corresponding volume on Laryngology, shortly to appear, will prove equally serviceable to the practitioner and advanced student. The fact that the text occupies double the space devoted to Rhinology in the fourth edition of that former work is due to the rapid progress in this speciality during the last ten years.<br><br>The author’s endeavour has been to present concisely the science as well as the practice of rhinology, since practice which is not founded on scientific principles becomes empirical, and the practitioner lacks the knowledge which alone can guide him through the maze of ever new operations and methods of treatment inevitable in any relatively young and rapidly developing branch of medical art. To fulfil conditions essential to an ideal text book, dogmatic statements are restricted to well-ascertained facts, while on debatable ground the opinions of the chief authorities on diseases of the nose are stated, as far as possible in the limited space, in order that the student may be guided to intelligent choice of alternatives in practice.
