Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. In the present edition I have added, at the close of this volume, an important document – namely, the Encyclical Letter of Pope Leo XIII., on the Christian constitution and government of States. It is closely connected with the famous Syllabus of his predecessor, Pins IX. (vol. II. pp.213-233), and sets forth more fully the papal or mediaeval theory of the relation between Church and State.
